When in South Africa, take the scenic route 🚗🇿🇦

The Garden Route is a scenic and ecologically diverse region in South Africa (and one of the most famous road trips in the country!). It stretches 300 kilometers (190 miles) from Mossel Bay to Storms River. It highlights some of the country’s most stunning landscapes, including epic coastlines, towering mountains, and lush forests. Not only does this road trip provide breathtaking views, but it also offers a chance to experience the rich biodiversity of the region, with numerous opportunities to see wildlife both on land and in the ocean.
You can do this road trip in many ways, but here’s my ideal itinerary, starting and ending in Cape Town:
Stop 1: Hermanus & L’Agullhas (Optional)
Start your journey in Cape Town driving from west to east. You can take a detour on your way to Mossel Bay along the coastal route, which is known for its whale watching opportunities. Spend 1 night in Hermanus (a cute seaside town celebrated for its charming atmosphere and vibrant arts scene) or L’Agullhas (the southernmost tip of Africa, where the Indian and Atlantic Oceans meet, and a great place to learn about maritime history).
Stop 2: Gondwana Game Reserve
Mossel Bay is the official start of the Garden Route, so a safari is the perfect way to kick off your road trip. Spend 2 nights here, where you can immerse yourself in the African bush and witness the Big Five in their natural habitat. The reserve also offers guided tours and educational programs about wildlife conservation.
Stop 3: Wilderness
Spend 1-2 nights in Wilderness if you love camping, nature, and adventure activities. This area boasts pristine beaches, lush forests, and tranquil lagoons. There’s camping, kayaking, hiking trails, and so much to explore, including birdwatching and nature walks that highlight the area’s diverse flora and fauna. Don’t miss the chance to visit the Wilderness National Park, which offers stunning views and unique geological formations.
Stop 4: Knysna
Spend 1-2 nights here — an island-dotted lagoon famous for its oysters, Knysna is perfect for sunset cruises, sailing, and water sports. Take time to explore the Knysna Heads, where the lagoon meets the ocean, and experience the vibrant local markets that showcase artisanal crafts and fresh produce.
Stop 5: Plettenburg Bay
Spend a night at Emily Moon River Lodge, it’s one of my favorite properties! This area is also great for outdoor activities, including hiking in the Robberg Nature Reserve, where you can see seals and sometimes even dolphins from the cliffs.
Stop 6: Nature’s Valley
Check out Monkeyland Sanctuary and Birds of Eden here! These attractions are home to rescued animals and offer a unique opportunity to learn about wildlife rehabilitation and conservation efforts. Nature’s Valley Beach is also a must-visit, perfect for a relaxing day by the ocean.
Stop 7: Storms River
Best for adrenaline junkies, this is “technically” the end of the Garden Route. Jump off the tallest bungee in the world at Bloukrans Bridge or book a Blackwater Tubing Adventure through the lush rainforest. Stay for 1 night and take in the stunning scenery of the Tsitsikamma National Park.
Stop 8: Jeffrey’s Bay
Why not continue the drive to end your trip on the opposite coast of South Africa at one of the top surf spots in the world? Be sure to stay 1-2 nights. Jeffrey’s Bay not only offers world-class surfing but also a laid-back atmosphere with charming cafes and shops. Take a surf lesson or simply relax on the beach.
Stop 9: Oudtshoorn (Optional)
Take a different route back to Cape Town by cutting through the South African Karoo and spending a night at De Zeekoe Guest House in Oudtshoorn. This area is famous for its ostrich farms, and you can wake up at sunrise to view wild meerkats, giving you a unique glimpse of these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat.
End: Cape Town
Once you return to Cape Town, consider extending your stay to explore the city’s rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture further. Visit Table Mountain, the Cape of Good Hope, and the local vineyards for a taste of South African wine. Enjoy the diverse culinary scene and immerse yourself in the local traditions and customs to truly experience the beauty of this country.
